Oak Hill Trail (Cuyahoga Valley National Park)

Oak Hill Trail is a 1.4-mile trail starting at the Oak Hill Trailhead right off Oak Hill Road. To begin, pull into the Oak Hill parking lot and walk towards the park sign/bathroom. From here, you’ll see two different trailhead markers, one to the left and one to the right. The hiking trail is a loop, and regardless of the direction you start, you’ll have the same experience.

My recommendation is to start on the trailhead on the left and go clockwise. You’ll quickly cross a footbridge and hike for 1/3 mile through a winding forest that is perfect for families, dogs, and casual hikers. During this section of the hike, expect to see the largest number of hikers.

Before you know it, you’ll come up on Sylvan Lake. Make sure to veer to the right (by staying on the Oak Hill loop trail) and see the beautiful Sylvan Lake. This is a great spot for a picnic, fishing, or to take a break and enjoy nature.

You’ll then continue to follow the trail to the right for another 1/3 mile through more winding woods. Keep your eyes open during this section, as you have the best chance to see deer, coyotes, squirrels, raccoons, etc.

You’ll then cross another footbridge and an intersection. In order not to get lost, make sure you continue to follow the Oak Hill loop trail to the right. The next 1/2 mile is one of the best spots in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park for birdwatchers and wildlife viewers.

Within the next few minutes, you’ll take a slight uphill trek for a few hundred feet. The trail will be very similar to what it has been for your entire hike before you finish in the parking lot.

Expert Tip

Oak Hill Trail is one of the most popular trails and areas in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It is also one of the most challenging hiking trail systems to navigate in the Cuyahoga Valley (I’ve hiked these trails for 20 years and still get lost from time to time). Because of this, I recommend sticking to the actual Oak Hill Loop trail and following only the signs. If you decide to veer off the loop, there is a high chance you’ll add lots of miles or even get lost.
