Virginia Kendall Sledding Hill

Kendall Hill Sledding

Virginia Kendall Sledding Hill in Cuyahoga Valley National Park is one of the premier hills in Northeast Ohio for sledding and snow tubing. It is open to visitors every day during this section (Pine Hollow) of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s hours (8 am to 6 pm daily during the winter). The best part is that you can visit and sled here, regardless of the amount of snow.

To have the best experience, it is important to know the following aspects of Virginia Kendall Hill:

  • You will need to bring your own sled, snow tube, or other sledding vehicle, as the park does not provide any
  • Virginia Kendall Hill is a large section of the park. While there are numerous hills to explore and enjoy, to minimize confusion, most visitors park in the Pine Hollow parking lot and sled at the hill directly in front of them (you cannot miss it!).
  • Bring snacks and water, as there are no concessions at the hill or near this area of the park
  • There are men’s and women’s bathrooms in a small yellow building at the top of the hill. There is also running water that you can refill bottles with.
  • There is also a “warming area”. This is a small but great area that has benches along the inside of a half-covered (no roof) wooden fenced area. The purpose of this area is to protect you against frequent winds that can make it quite chilly. There is also a generous load of wood, and on certain days, a fire in the center to keep visitors warm.
  • For children under 10, I recommend bringing a small helmet, as these are some of the fastest (if not the fastest) hills in Ohio, and there have been injuries every year
  • While the hill right in front of Pine Hollow parking lot is the most popular sledding spot, I recommend hiking through the Kendall Hill/Lake area, as there are almost 10 hills of different lengths, speeds, and unique properties that can be explored and sledded.
  • If you have any questions about the area, this is a large sign and information post right in front of the bathrooms that gives information about the hill, area, etc. Or you can always send me an email, and I’ll provide any answers or expert tips you need.

Expert Tip

No matter when you go to the Virginia Kendall Sledding Area, you will have a blast. But to take advantage of this fantastic experience, you should:

  • Visit early in the morning or an hour before dusk. This is a popular area for sledding, where all surrounding communities know about it and visit it after a heavy snow. By going early or late, you have a better chance of running into someone else on the hill or having to deal with heavy crowds.
  • If you want the sledding hill to yourself, wait several days after a snowfall or visit when the snow begins to melt. My son and I were just about a week after the latest snow, an hour before dusk on a weeknight, and we had the whole park to ourselves!
  • Dress properly. The sledding hill is up high and in an open area, and the wind can be fast and furious, causing the wind chill to drop quickly. Warm clothes, snow pants, gloves, hats, and boots are highly recommended.
