The Cleveland Metropark Maple Sugaring Festival at the Rocky River Reservation allows visitors to learn how maple syrup is made, try samples of local maple syrup, and participate in family-friendly seasonal activities. This is an annual tradition in Northeast Ohio from mid-February through mid-March, from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. While you can find numerous maple sugaring events throughout Ohio, this one is the best.

Visiting and participating in the maple sugaring festival at the Rocky River Reservation has become relatively easy over the past few years due to how well-organized the event is.

Due to the lack of parking at the Maple Grove Picnic area, you will notice signs directing you to park at the Lagoon Picnic Area. If the lot is full, there is an overflow parking lot right next to it, and also street parking.

Once you park, you have about a 1/2 mile walk to the Maple Grove Picnic area, where the self-guided tour begins. This is a pleasant walk on a paved, flat surface that takes you by several ponds where you have a high likelihood of seeing beautiful birds and other wildlife. It is very easy to get to the self-guided area, just follow the park signs and fellow visitors.

Once you are at the Maple Grove Picnic area, feel free to stop and grab a snack at the Cleveland Metropark food truck, where the food prices are very reasonable. You’ll then want to “check in” at the first table you see, where you can learn about the equipment used during the maple sugaring process. At this table, you can also buy some of the best maple sugar candy around.

Next, you’ll notice the self-guided tour to the right. The tour itself will take you about 10-15 minutes if you stop and observe all the stations and read all the signs. Kids will not only love learning fun new facts about the maple sugaring process and park, but also will love exploring the trail and what it holds.

Once you are done with the self-guided tour, you will spend the rest of your time at the sugar house. Here you can watch sap turn into maple syrup, get free samples of pancakes and syrup, and have the opportunity to purchase local maple syrup.

This is a great area to spend 30 minutes relaxing on the picnic tables, exploring the area, or learning/participating at the educational stations. At these educational stations, you’ll observe and learn how maple syrup was made by our settlers, gather and stay warm by a bonfire, and learn more about the park and its history. When you’re all done, it is just a quick walk back to your car, but if you have more time, I recommend checking out the nature center, trying your hand at fishing, or taking one of many hikes throughout the park.

Expert Tip

Cleveland Metropark Maple Sugaring is one of the most popular events in February and March in the Rocky River Reservation during winter/early spring. Because of this, every Saturday and Sunday are packed with crowds wanting to experience this family-friendly event in Northeast Ohio.

Due to this, I recommend going to the Rocky River Reservation at 10:45 am, before they open, to get a parking spot and enjoy the self-guided maple tour with minimal crowds. If this doesn’t work for your schedule, then I recommend going at 3 pm, an hour before the event closes (you’ll find plenty of parking spots and minimal crowds).

In addition, I recommend bringing some cash and a credit card in case you want to purchase anything from the food truck, maple candy, or local maple syrup.
