Blendon Woods Inclusive Playground Guide
Blendon Woods Inclusive Playground
Officially opened on April 10, 2025, the Blendon Woods Inclusive Playground is a state-of-the-art and one-of-a-kind playground in Blendon Woods Metro Parks. It is located a short mile or so from the Blendon Woods Nature Center and close to several pavilions, making it the perfect family destination for the day, no matter the size or ability of your family.
Unlike many traditional playgrounds, the innovative inclusive playground at Blendon Woods was designed to allow children of all ages, abilities, and communities to play together through accessible surfacing, multi-use equipment, and sensory-rich elements.
As you enter the playground through the locked gate, you’ll notice how wide open and accessible the first section of the playground is. This section is perfect for children with disabilities and young children between the ages of 1 – 4. You’ll notice here several easy sensory pieces of equipment, a small slide, a small playhouse, a safe teeter-tot, and a train that can be navigated by all.

As you progress through the playground, you’ll find traditional equipment that includes slides, “forts”, monkey bars, walking paths, and even a small rock climbing area. Some of the other favorite activities include an above-ground obstacle course, harder sensory activities, and even musical instruments that can entertain kids for hours.

For kids who are older or want more adventure, there are even more and bigger slides, obstacle courses, and jungle-gym areas. Best of all, there is even an all-ability zip line that may be one of the best parts of the playground. Of course, you’ll find your traditional swingsets, even more sensory activities, and a couple more surprises I’ll let you find on your own.

For families that want to spend a full day, you’ll be happy to know there is a very nice tented picnic table area where you can watch your kids. Not only this, but there is a partially enclosed pavilion with cooking facilities, a fireplace, a cooking and washing area, grills, a bathroom, and additional green space that you can enjoy. And if that isn’t enough, you can walk a few hundred feet and find a clean and fun sand pit that can be enjoyed by your little ones on a warm and dry day.

Expert Tip
While Blendon Woods MetroParks is mostly quiet during the weekdays and some weekends, the Inclusive Playground is almost always busy at all times of the year with families, reservations, schools, and camps.
If you want to enjoy the playground to yourself or just with a few other families, I recommend visiting on weeknights as soon as it opens or approximately 45 minutes before it closes. While there is no guarantee you’ll have the playground to yourself, you will find it much less crowded and a much more enjoyable experience for your kids.
In addition, visiting in the early spring, late fall, and even warmer winter days will make it an enjoyable experience for your kids.
