Hiking Woodland Trail (Rocky River Reservation)

The Woodland Loop, also known as the Storybook Trail, is a 1/2 mile loop within the Rocky River Reservation (Cleveland MetroParks). It may be one of Ohio’s easiest hikes, as it takes you on a dirt-trail loop that offers educational opportunities, stories, natural attractions, and beautiful views of the Rocky River.

You’ll start by walking from the Rocky River parking lot and immediately take a left where you’ll find the Storybook Trail sign (also known as the Woodland Trail). This is one of the best hikes for kids and families in Ohio as there are small “books” along the way to help teach and entertain your children.

You’ll continue along the trail, which is magnificent in the fall, but provides a different perspective no matter what time of year you hike. Along the trail, you’ll notice different small signs that point out the type of trees and plants within the forest.

As you quickly turn the corner, you’ll start to get a view of the Rocky River. My recommendation is not to stop but keep hiking until you get to a lookout where you can stand in awe of how the river has carved the cliffs behind it.

Once you are ready to hike again, continue down the path where you’ll quickly approach a favorite of parents and children alike, the nature garden. Here you’ll get views of different plants that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. This is also a great place to let the children roam around for a bit.

When you are ready, continue, and you’ll quickly finish the trail within the next couple of minutes. You can choose to either take a right back to your car or take a left to head to more trails or the Rocky River Nature Center.

Expert Tip

This is a fun and easy trail in the Rocky River Reservation and Cleveland Metroparks system that can be experienced all year for families and solo hikers alike, but it is in the most crowded section of the park.

To have the best experience, hike this trail at dusk or dawn. If you have kids and can’t make these times, then I recommend any time besides the lunch hour in summer.

To have the most enjoyable time, bring a snack and some water, and don’t forget to stop by the Rocky River Nature Center too.
