The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad North Pole Adventure runs from November 14th to December 22nd (2025) at 5:00 PM and 7:55 PM EST for approximately 90 minutes
If you prefer to avoid crowds, it is recommended that you ride the train in November. If you want to experience an authentic holiday experience closer to Christmas, you should buy tickets in mid to late December. It should be noted that these tickets sell out almost immediately to the public (although recently they’ve added numerous cars and dates, making it easier to access tickets closer to the time you would like to attend).
You should arrive 30 minutes to 1 hour before your train ride to guarantee parking and enjoy the whole North Pole Adventure experience.
It should also be noted that tickets began for sale on October 1st, 2025. For a small Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad membership fee of $75, you can access tickets early. Non-member tickets range in price from $50 – $100, depending on the car you choose.

To begin your Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad North Pole Adventure, you will want to arrive at the Independence (Lock 39 Trailhead) parking lot 30 minutes to 1 hour before the start of your ride. You will most likely wait in a car line for 15 – 20 minutes to park.
It is highly recommended that you wear your favorite Christmas t-shirt or pajamas. You can then take your time, walk around, and even venture to the Towpath Trail.
You will then check in at the first tent you see. This is also where you can buy souvenirs and concession items. Once the train arrives, you and your family will notice the excitement building. Follow the elves and Santa’s helpers as they assist you on the train. As you enter your assigned seat, you will see that the train has been decorated with presents, a garland, and other festive decorations. Each train has its own theme, so make sure to pick the car you want when purchasing tickets.
As the train leaves the depot for your 90-minute tour, milk and cookies will be served to you and your family (you can buy hot chocolate and other snacks at the concession tent before you board). Your children will also be given letters to fill out for Santa and a sing-along book filled with games and lyrics to popular Christmas songs.
For the first 30 minutes, most of the excitement is on the train. After 30 minutes of the ride, the next 10 – 15 minutes of excitement will be witnessed through the window of the cars. As you enter Peninsula, aka the “North Pole,” you will notice an amazing display of lights, characters, and themes throughout downtown. The most exciting part, though, is witnessing Santa and his sleigh going by you.
As the train turns around for its departure back home, your children will notice Santa is no longer on his sleigh. Before you know it, he enters your train car, spending cherished time with your children, learning what gifts they want for Christmas, what their favorite part of the ride has been, and even getting a picture with them.
Once Santa visits with all the kids and leaves your car, you’ll spend the next 20-25 minutes singing carols that surely will excite children and adults of all ages. There is also Elf trivia, more games to be had in your sing-along book, and plenty of other activities to keep your children involved and entertained.
Before you know it, you’ll arrive back in Independence, where you will be given a parting gift from Santa’s elves. I recommend spending 10 -15 minutes getting pictures, exploring the campus, and taking it in the Christmas spirit so that you don’t have to sit in a line of cars waiting to exit.
